IPL Scam or IPL Gate: Lalit Modi to launch his own cricket IPL or Indian People’s League

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 27, 2010

According to reliable sources from within the Lalit Modi camp, it is possible that Lalit Modi and his cronies may be planning to launch their own version of the IPL or the Indian Premier League. The name doing the rounds for the new cricket body is the Indian People’s League – a name that Lalit Modi had used during one of his last official speeches as IPL Commissioner and IPL Chairman. Will the Lalit Modi camp be able to register or official use the same or similar name will remain to be seen.

And supporting Lalit Modi is none less than the patriarch of the Modi group and Lalit Modi’s father K K Modi. In an interview to CNN-IBN, K K Modi said that if the BCCI gave Lalit Modi something like Rs 200 crore to start the IPL, he was willing to invest double that amount or Rs 400 crore to start a similar or parallel league.

IPL gate: Lalit Modi still IPL Commissioner and IPL Chairman on BCCI website

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 27, 2010

By Flynn Remedios – Futuristic Media Network

Lalit Modi will surely be grinning from ear -to-ear on this one, while Shashank Manohar and his camp at the BCCI would be red faced, cross and angry.

Almost 48 hours after it suspended Lalit Modi as IPL chairman and IPL Commissioner and barred him from attending the governing council meeting, the BCCI has still to make the requisite changes to their website and all the relevant related websites. Lalit Modi still appears as IPL chairman and IPL Commissioner on most the official BCCI , IPL and related websites.

Lalit Modi’s tweets on Twitter as the chairman and IPL commissioner also appear on the home page of the IPL website through an RSS feed.

Lalit Modi: “Mera Pass Papa Hein”

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 27, 2010

A similing Lalit Modi in spite of his suspension as Commissioner and Chairman of the IPL, by the BCCI governing council must surely be saying, “Mera pass Papa hein”, even as Ratnakar Shetty began his probe into what has now come to be known as IPL gate.

BCCI President Shashank Manohar washed his hands off all liability for Lalit Modi’s alleged wrong doings by saying that “you don’t expect us to come and sit here all day long”. He also said that some papers pertaining to the bids and other crucuial, sensitive and confidential matters were missing.

Has Lalit Modi gone underground to prepare his next move or has a compromise deal been struck??

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

Has Lalit Modi gone underground after the BCCI announced an interrim chairman? Apparently all his phones were switched off or not reachable and there was complete silence on Twitter as well. The Modi camp was completely silent and even close associates of Modi were tight-lipped. Or has a compromise formula been worked out between Shashank Manohar, Lalit Modi and the BCCI?

A few random statements by Shashank Manohar during the press conference that followed the governing council meeting would make one think so. Firstly Manohar said “suspension is not a punishment”. He also said that Lalit Modi will be given a hearing and an opportunity to defend himseld and if he offers a resonable explanation, the probe will be dropped or wound up. In other words it looks like a compromise deal has been worked out between the warring parties, say some BCCI sources and BCCI watchers.

The script goes like this: Lalit Modi is suspended dramatically by the BCCI to show that the Board has taken stern and decisive action. He is show-caused and given time to reply. The so-called enquiry proceeds on paper with each party going through the rituals.. A new commissioner is appointed and life goes on as usual at the BCCI. A few weeks or months later, the media and the general public forget the entire issue as the controversy dies a natural death. No more heads roll. No more skeletons come tumbling out of the BCCI closets. Lalit Modi lies low for a few months and then re-surfaces in a new avatar. Everybody is a winner in this case. For the record, the BCCI says their enquiry didn’t find any incriminating evidence or solid proof against Modi and he is given the benefit of doubt as the heat evaporates and things cool down. Lalit Modi’s explanation is found satisfactory and eventually as the media and investigating agencies lose interest, Modi is let off the hook. In the end its much ado about nothing, with the press having made a mountain of a molehill.

IPLgate: Secret witch hunt begins as Lalit Modi loyalists at IPL will be sidelined or shown the door

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

With Lalit Modi’s suspension and the IPL finals complete, a secret witch hunt has been initiated by Lalit Modi’s detractors or should we say by the BCCI top brass to flush out the Lalit Modi loyalists and sympathisers within the IPL. Will CEO Sundar Raman stay or will he be shunted out? It all depends on how he plays his cards. Or rather on how he has been playing his cards the last few months.

While one camp says CEO Sundar Raman is a Modi loyalist, another source says Raman was carefull enough to know on which side his bread was buttered. Another source also suggests that Raman was a some sort of a double agent keeping all his masters happy. Let’s see how the cookie crumbles. Or how the bells toll and for whom? Either way expect a few more heads to roll in the next few days both at the IPL office and the BCCI, as more skeletons come rumbling out of the closets.

IPL gate: Lalit Modi’s arbitrary suspension bad in law, say legal experts

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

More than one legal expert in Mumbai and Delhi reacted with shock at the arbitrary and haphazard way in which the BCCI issued the suspension or sacking notice via email to Lalit Modi, within minutes of the last IPL match or the finals.

According to the legal eagles, the BCCI should have waited till early morning to issue the notice. “It was almost past midnight. A show cause notice issued at mid night reeks of high handedness and arrogance. They could have sent the notice at 8 am, but at 1 am seems a bit too much. If it was so urgent or so serious then the BCCI should have issued the notice on Sunday evening itself.

A senior counsel from Mumbai on condition of anonymity said, “If they (the BCCI) could wait till the finals were over, they could have waited for one more night. It’s sad for cricket in India, when the administrators of the sport play such dirty games. It is not possible that the alleged wrongdoing or misdeeds could have been done or undertaken by Lalit Modi without the knowledge or even subtle approval of some other senior members or governing council members.

Meanwhile news reports suggested that Modi has been given 15 days time to reply to the BCCI suspension notice. As a result of his suspension, Lalit Modi cannot attend the BCCI governing council meeting on Monday morning. According to a report by IANS:

After suspending Lalit Modi as vice president of Board of Control for Cricket in India and Indian Premier League’s chairman and commissioner, board president Shashank Manohar Monday said alleged acts of “individual misdemeanours” of Modi have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket.

Manohar also issued a show cause notice to Modi asking him to explain within 15 days why he should not be suspended.

“The events of the last few days have thrown up lot of sad and unfortunate developments,” Manohar said in a press statement in the early hours Monday.

“While we rejoice and celebrate the great success of IPL season 3, the alleged acts of individual misdemeanours of Mr.Lalit Modi, Chairman IPL and vice president, BCCI, have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself.”

Manohar said that he waited for the IPL to conclude before taking any action against Modi because he did not wanted to “disrupt” the tournament.

“Immediately after the conclusion of the IPL final, the BCCI secretary, Mr. N. Srinivasan has in consultation with me issued a show cause notice to Lalit Modi under Rule 32 (iv) calling upon him to show cause within 15 days why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.”

“Simultaneously in exercise of the powers vested in me under Rule 32 (vii), I have suspended Mr. Lalit Modi from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL, the Working Committee and any other Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India,” Manohar said.

IPL scam: Director, producer and actor Roshan Abbas threatens to sue Lalit Modi, IPL finals committee, alleging plagiarism

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

There is more trouble brewing for beleagured and now suspended IPL commissioner and IPL Chairman Lalit Modi. Director, Producer, actor and event manager Roshan Abbas has threatened to take Lalit Modi to court alleging plagiarism.

Says Roshan Abbas in a statement, “We had presented a concept to the IPL Committee last year. The closing ceremony of the IPL finals is uncannily similar to our concept and we will take it up with our group company JWT Group and our legal counsel and then decide on our future steps.

On TV channel Headlines Today, Roshan Abbas in a live interview said that he will sue Lalit Modi and the organizing committee of the IPL finals for ‘stealing his concept’. According to him, the white mannequin with A R Rahman performing at the closing ceremony was his concept which he has shared with Lalit Modi last year.

Roshan Abbas is working with Shah Rukh Khan on the film Always Kabhi Kabhi.

IPL gate: Lalit Modi sacked as IPL Commissioner: To appeal in the Bombay High Court or Supreme Court

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

It is learnt that immediately after the BCCI announced – upon completion of the finals match between Mumbai and Chennai – that Lalit Modi has been suspended and sacked (for a period of six months) by the BCCI, the Lalit Modi camp said that they would knock on the doors of the Bombay High Court and maybe even the Supreme Court of India the first thing on Monday morning. There is much drama expected on Monday morning as the Lalit Modi camp takes recourse to the courts of the land.

Sources said that even IPL CEO Sundar Raman may have his wings clipped. A three-member panel will now run the IPL as no new interim IPL Commissioner or IPL Chairman has been announced.

IPLgate: Lalit Modi suspended as IPL Commissioner as Chennai Super Kings trump Mumbai Indians by 22 runs?

Posted by IndiaNewsInfo.com on April 26, 2010

Has the beleaguered IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi been suspended by the BCCI Board? Sources say YES. It’s just the official announcement that remains to be done.

And the official announcement came within seconds of the IPL final. Lalit Modi was sent an email by the BCCI quoting article 32 of the BCCI charter. Lalit Modi has been accused of various misdeeds and has been showcaused by the BCCI.

Says Flynn Remedios author of the under-publication IPL Gate and an unofficial biography on “Lalit Modi – the man we all love and hate”, “My reliable sources within the BCCI tell me that all the paper work required to suspend Lalit Modi as IPL Commissioner and issue him a show cause notice for flouting norms and impropriation is ready. The paper work was ready as of 8 pm on Sunday evening. It has merely to be delivered to Lalit Modi. The BCCI top brass is waiting for the right moment or should we say opportune moment to forward the official notice to Lalit Modi and also announce the same to the media.

The BCCI President Shashank Manohar was till Sunday morning hopeful of reaching a face-saving compromise formula with Lalit Modi. Shashank Manohar wanted to avoid at all cost a direct confrontation with Lalit Modi whom everyone within the BCCI knows is a walking encyclopedia of dangerous information. If Modi opens his mouth, several heads could roll within the BCCI. Modi’s revenge would also take its toll within the government and at least two Ministers are likely to feel the heat, if not loose their chairs.

However, Lalit Modi’s tweet saying that he would attend the BCCI governing council meeting on Monday and also chair it, pulled the rug from the BCCI’s feet. The decided to keep all the paperwork ready just in case Lalit Modi made one more wrong move.

Meanwhile the Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians  by 22 runs becoming IPL champions 2010.
